Smoke Emissions from Wildland Fires

چکیده
Biomass burning is a major source of emissions to the atmosphere. Some of these emissions may change global climate. This paper uses combustion eff iciency as an independent variable for predicting emission factors for, among others, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and particulate matter. Other gases are correlated with the release of carbon monoxide. The release of nitrogen and sulfur-based compounds occurs in relation to their content in the biomass. The Sundance Fire is used to model the emissions from major fires that have occurred in the United States. Approximately 1 Tg of biomass was consumed by this fire, which released 0.019, 0.151, 1.545, and 0.007 Tg of particulate matter, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen, respectively. Other fires have released over 50 times this amount. Global emissions of various products of combustion are dependent on the combustion efficiency of the fires.

Wildland fire emissions, carbon, and climate: Plume rise, atmospheric transport, and chemistry processes
This paper provides an overview and summary of the current state of knowledge regarding critical atmospheric processes that affect the distribution and concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols emitted from wildland fires or produced through subsequent chemical reactions in the atmosphere. These critical atmospheric processes include the dynamics of plume rise, chemical reactions involvin...
متن کاملQuantification of pollutants emitted from very large wildland fires in Southern California, USA
This study investigates the efficacy of the first order fire effects model (FOFEM) implemented in a geographic information system for wildland fire emissions estimation. The objective of the study was to quantify the source and composition of smoke and emissions from wildland fires that burned 235,267 ha in Southern California, USA, in October 2003. From inputs of vegetation, fuel model data, w...
متن کاملCurrently there is a growing awareness about the effects that smoke from wildland fires can have in the environment
A forest fire is a large-scale natural combustion process consuming various ages, sizes and types of botanical specimens, growing outdoors in a defined geographical area. Although wildland fires are an integral part of ecosystems management and are essential to maintain functional ecosystems (Sandberg et al., 2002), their proportions can give rise to disastrous results. Within the consequences ...
متن کاملAtmospheric Response and Feedback to Smoke Radiative Forcing from Wildland Fires
Smoke from wildland fires is one of the sources of atmospheric anthropogenic aerosols. it can dramatically affect regional and global radiative balance. Ross et al. (1998) estimated a direct radiative forcing of nearly -20 ~ m ' for the 1995 Amazonian smoke season (August and September). Penner et al. (1992) indicated that the magnitude of the smoke global radiative forcing is comparable to tha...
متن کاملWildfire Emission Modeling: Integrating BlueSky and SMOKE
Atmospheric chemical transport models are used to simulate historic meteorological episodes for developing air quality management strategies. Wildland fire emissions need to be characterized accurately to achieve these air quality management goals. The temporal and spatial estimates of emissions from fires, both wild and prescribed, have been problematic primarily because of uncertainty in the ...
متن کاملAligning Smoke Management with Ecological and Public Health Goals
Past and current forest management affects wildland fire smoke impacts on downwind human populations. However, mismatches between the scale of benefits and risks make it difficult to proactively manage wildland fires to promote both ecological and public health. Building on recent literature and advances in modeling smoke and health effects, we outline a framework to more directly quantify and ...
